New Court Construction

How a Har-Tru Court Gets Built

Skid steer excavation is the standard first phase of every Har-Tru clay court we build. The compact machine grades the site, removes vegetation, and excavates 12–18 inches into the subsoil to create a stable, sloped foundation. Here's exactly what happens from raw ground to finished court.

STEP 01

Site Preparation & Excavation

A skid steer fitted with a grading bucket or laser-controlled attachment removes topsoil and digs to the required depth. Compact excavators then trench the perimeter to pour the concrete curb that contains all court materials.

STEP 02

Base Material & Compaction

After excavation the sub-base is compacted with a heavy vibratory roller. A 4–6 inch layer of crushed stone, lime rock, or crushed concrete is laid to ensure proper drainage and a stable playing platform.

Vibratory compaction · Crushed stone base · Drainage aggregate

STEP 03

Irrigation & Drainage Systems

Modern Har-Tru courts feature subsurface HydroCourt irrigation — plumbing and a synthetic liner beneath the court hydrate the clay from below. Precise trenching keeps the system level and the surface moisture consistent.

STEP 04

Laser Grading & Har-Tru Application

A 2–3 inch layer of stone dust screenings is applied and laser-graded to the exact court pitch — typically 1-in-30 for surface drainage. Finally, a 1-inch layer of crushed metabasalt (Har-Tru) is spread and rolled until firm.

Subsurface Irrigation

Traditional Sprinkler or HydroCourt?

Traditional overhead sprinklers are simpler to install and lower in upfront cost. A subsurface HydroCourt system hydrates the clay from below — delivering more consistent moisture, less surface disruption, and reduced water waste. For private Florida courts where playability matters year-round, we typically recommend HydroCourt.

We'll walk you through both options during your free site assessment — no obligation, just the facts.

Project Type

New Build or Converting an Existing Court?

A brand-new court starts from raw ground — full excavation, base, drainage, and surface. Converting an existing asphalt court to Har-Tru requires a different approach: we assess the existing base, address drainage issues, and build up the clay system on top. Both paths lead to the same result — a court built to last.

Industry best practices and equipment specs are documented in the Har-Tru resource portal.
